Edition 1, February 15, 2008

The Puget Sound Partnership has an ambitious charge: figure out what’s wrong with Puget Sound, then organize a community-led effort to fix it. That effort, the Action Agenda, seeks community input to create a healthy Puget Sound---from the end of Hood Canal to the San Juan Islands. We will determine what is needed to make Puget Sound healthy again, and create a roadmap for how to get it done.

In this issue:
What is the Action Agenda?

Much has been done to protect Puget Sound, but the job is far from finished. For the first time, our entire region is joining together to build a coordinated, comprehensive Action Agenda, a living, adaptable roadmap to address the greatest threats and greatest opportunities for the Sound. We’re not starting from scratch—we’re compiling and synthesizing work already underway so we can build on what’s in place and what we already know.

The Partnership is working collaboratively with elected and public officials, tribes, business leaders, scientists, environmentalists and citizens to develop the Agenda by our September 1, 2008 deadline.

Read more about the Agenda online and in our Action Agenda fact sheet.

Join us and help build the Action Agenda

Help develop the Action Agenda by attending an upcoming workshop in your area. Workshops will be designed to collect local information on the Sound’s status and threats, and begin to develop a framework for determining priorities. Visit the Web site for details about workshop dates, times, locations and agendas. We will also have time for an open community conversation following each area workshop, at the same location.

You can submit comments and questions using our online comment form at any time.

Scientists from around the region lend a hand

On Feb. 20, scientists from throughout Puget Sound will meet to review a health and threats assessment prepared by NOAA Northwest Fisheries Science Center and the Partnership. This peer review and the status and threats report will help guide development of the Action Agenda. Visit the Web site for more details about the peer review workshop.
